Banking and Financial Services

The growth of the Russian economy had, in recent years, been largely driven by rising commodity and energy prices. According to experts, further, more balanced and sustained, innovation-based economic growth can be achieved by developing the Russian financial market. In 2010, the Russian Government approved a concept for the creation of an international financial center in the Russian Federation.

The document provides that by 2012, one of the Russian exchange floors will be among top 12 exchanges by trading volume and stock and bond placement, with foreign securities accounting for at least 10% of the total traded volume. At the same time, the concept developers believe, the financial sector's share in Russia's GDP will have increased from today's 4% to 6%.

Having a hi-tech globally competitive financial services industry in place will help to boost diversification of the national economy both directly and indirectly — through making investment resources available for the development of the real sector's fastest growing industries.

As of 1 January 2010, 1,178 credit institutions, with 1,058 of them licensed to conduct banking operations, and 702 insurance companies were registered in Russia.

Over 2010, the banking sector’s assets increased by 14,9% to 33804,6 bln rubles. Credit institutions’ equity grew by 2.4% to 4732,3 bln rubles.

Credit institutions’ total earnings were 573,4 bln rubles in 2010 vs 205.1 bln rubles in 2009.
