Forestry and Lumber
Forestry and lumber is one of the oldest economic industries and is distinct in its fairly complex structure. The industry's sectors, each dealing with a certain stage of lumber processing, can be split into two groups. The first one includes the production of sawn lumber and furniture (mechanical processing), the second one comprises wood chemistry and the pulp and paper industry (chemical processing).
With around 22% of the global wood reserves (81.3 bcm, of which 40.3 bcm are usable) on its territory, Russia is the owner of one of the world's largest forest resources. Read more
Forest assets are owned by the state. Forestry accounts for more than 4% of Russia's overall industrial output and export. More than 22 thousand companies operate in the industry, including around 3 thousand large and mid-sized businesses, more than 95% of which are joint-stock companies. Forestry employs more than one million people (7 percent of the manufacturing industry's workforce) and owns 3% of the manufacturing industry's capital assets. The country is the world's largest owner of forest resources with around a quarter of the global wood reserves situated on its territory. At the same time, Russia represents as little as less than 3% of global trade in wood and paper products. Unprocessed wood accounts for around 40% of Russian export. However, Russia's share of the external market of sawn lumber and downstream wood products is insignificant.
The CIS market remains of fundamental importance for the Russian wood and paper industry. Although current export volumes to CIS countries do not exceed 0.3 bln US dollars, there is significant potential for the future. The outlook for demand for Russian lumber and paper products is overall favorable and the demand is expected to last.
Domestic sales of wood and paper products are expected to boost by 2015. Over this period, the highest demand will be for high-quality paper for the printing industry; packing, tissue, and office paper; improved paper and board products; all kinds of furniture; high-quality sheet materials and joinery; a wide range of wood chemistry products.
