Mechanical Engineering
Mechanical engineering is a complex of industries which manufacture production tools, transport vehicles, durable consumer goods, and defense products.
Mechanical engineering comprises 19 large complexes, 9 industries, and more than 100 specialty segments and sectors. The complex's industries, similar in process flows and feedstock used, include: heavy engineering, power engineering, transport engineering, electrical engineering, chemical and petroleum engineering, machine-tool engineering, instrument engineering, tractor and agricultural engineering, mechanical engineering for light and food industry, etc. With 3,300 large and mid-sized businesses alone, this complex in Russia employs around 3.9 mln people, or 34.5% of the country's employable population working in the manufacturing sector.

Mechanical engineering accounts for 19.5% of Russia's industrial output, whereas in Germany, Japan, USA and other developed countries this figure varies from 39 to 45%. Today, Russia ranks 22nd in the world for production and 17th for consumption of mechanical processing equipment and has a 0.3% share on the global machine-tool market. The transport strategy of the Russian Federation forecasts that by 2025, mechanical engineering will be dominated by technology-intensive sectors, its human resources will be renewed and trained, and production facilities modernized. Russia will start to generate and appropriate intellectual rent arising from the use of technological innovations unavailable to other countries, thus securing its niche in the international division of labor. The mentioned growth rates of mechanical engineering output will enable to bring its share to 27% in the manufacturing sector and 17% in GDP.
