Metals and Mining
Metals production is Russia's backbone, strategic sector representing a substantial share of the country's economy. Metallurgy accounts for around 5% of Russia's GDP. It is 16% of the country's industrial production with ferrous metals alone representing 10% of the same. The sector's share in industrial capital assets is 11.1%, in headcount — 9.3%, in exports — around 18% (second best after energy sectors). The metals sector secures 9% of the total tax payments to the budgets of all levels.
Today, Russia is fourth in the world for explored gold reserves (behind SAR, USA, and Canada) and first among the CIS countries. Russia ranks fourth in the world in steel production, third in the export of metal products, second in the production and export of aluminium; it leads the world in the production of nickel and is second in the production of titanium.
Metals production features high degrees of concentration, monopolization, and combined production.
