Retail Trade

The global retail market is enjoying sustained growth. Of the total $10 trn it generates in revenue, Western Europe accounts for around one third. Russia, representing 2% of the turnover, is among world’s ten largest retail markets.

Retail trade is one of the fastest developing sectors of the Russian economy. The percentage of modern-format retail stores is increasing year after year, taking over from such sales channels as markets and over-the-counter stores.

The Russian retail market has a low level of concentration (e.g., in grocery retail, top three players represent around 4% of the market — a share way below that in Europe and America). International chains have roughly a 30-percent share among top ten grocery retail players in Russia.
